A pediment began in classic
architecture as the decorative triangular structure, or gable, found
above the horizontal surface (roof) atop the columns in a Greek or
Roman temple. These pediments were often used for ornate and beautifully
carved friezes, medallions or religious symbolism. Ancient structures
also bear them over window openings. |
