"Door - Paneled Pilasters"

Paneled Pilasters

Pilasters are the vertical molding pieces used to provide decorative framing to outdoor entryways. They are designed to resemble columns but are not as large or as intrusive; a typical pilaster may be four to five inches in width though pilasters can range to nearly a foot in width. Many have a plinth block at the top for mounting the crosshead over the entryway. There are a number of popular designs for pilasters; among them is the paneled pilaster. This design has the appearance of a squared off column facing with narrow vertical panels inset. Double paneled pilasters usually feature a narrower panel on the lower portion of the pilaster and a wider panel at the top.

Paneled pilasters are used today around garage doors and principal entrances to a home; in some instances they are also utilized around large windows. The column effect that a pilaster provides adds a look of architectural elegance to a home. A paneled pilaster has the look of craftsmanship often found in the libraries and living rooms of older large homes. This rich look can also be carried through with pilasters manufactured from synthetic materials. The molding processes employed today can produce a synthetic paneled pilaster that is difficult to differentiate from a carved wooden original.

• Pilasters produced from urethane are excellent substitutes for milled wood products.

• Even double paneled pilasters can be accurately reproduced so that they are virtually indistinguishable from wood.

• Urethane architectural products handle adverse weather conditions better than wood with minimal cracking, no peeling and virtually no fading.

• Urethane products can be extremely resilient, depending on density and usually require no water sealing.

• Double paneled pilasters are a good choice for an elaborate crosshead or pediment over a home’s principal entryway.

• The ornamentation provided by pilasters, milled crossheads and pediments can help add to the resale value of a house.
