Guide to Door's and Window's
"Door - Fluted Pilasters"

Pilasters are ornamental framing used on the exteriors of doors, garage doors and occasionally, windows. A door with a decorative, milled crosspiece extending over the entryway will usually have pilasters, which are the vertical pieces supporting the overhead ornamentation. Pilasters are designed to resemble the columns found in ancient Greek and Roman architecture; like those stone columns of past centuries pilasters are generally produced in three styles: smooth, paneled and fluted.

Of the three, the fluted pilaster is the most elegant. It has parallel channels running down its length as found in a fluted column. The top of the pilaster consists of a plinth block which is designed to connect to the horizontal crosspiece over the entryway. Fluted pilasters will typically have a smooth area at the base, with the fluting running up the pilaster to a termination point a few inched beneath the plinth block.

Many pilasters utilized in modern buildings today are manufactured from urethane products rather than wood. Urethane is more resistant to the adverse impacts of weather and often urethane products are more cheaply produced. This applies particularly to such items as fluted pilasters, which would require a good deal of millwork if manufactured from wood.

• The elegance of fluted pilasters alters the entire facing of a home, especially if their use is extended to windows or garage doors.

• Fluted pilasters match up well with formal crossheads, the ornamental milled extensions seen over formal entryways. Crossheads are also manufactured from urethane materials today.

• Formal paneling and molding manufactured from urethane will not peel or crack like wood; in many cases no sealant for water protection is required.

• The molding process for urethane fluted pilasters is so refined today that even the fluting detail is smooth and cleanly defined as with a well milled piece of wood.

• The type of architectural sophistication provided by elegant touches such as pilasters and pediments can give a home of average design a substantially more elegant look.

• Pilasters are designed to resemble columns but are substantially narrower, bringing them into conformance with the dimensions of a standard home.
