Oiled Bronze Door knocker

Bronze door knockers are a traditional form, although today door knockers are manufactured from several different metals and alloys. It seems as if in the older homes those doors that don’t have iron fixtures have bronze door knockers. Traditionalists have a number of options open to them today; bronze is being used to create some interesting door knocker designs.

Some of the more traditional styles are done in bronze. Door knocker impresario Michael Healy has created a series of bronze door knockers that are castings of dogs’ heads. There are a number of breeds represented. Your bronze door knocker can look like the head of a Yorkshire Terrier, a Boxer, a Beagle, a Labrador Retriever, or a German Shepherd.

These traditional pet renderings are done in polished bronze. There are also a number of bronze door knockers on the market that are oiled bronze, a finish that is a little darker than polished bronze and has a sheen rather than a reflective sparkle.

• Bronze door knockers are also available in non-traditional motifs such as a longhorn cattle skull or a Nantucket picnic basket.

• More delicate figures such as dragonflies are done with bronze and brass to provide offsetting polished colors.

• Bronze and brass also makes a beautiful American Eagle’s head door knocker

• Unique floral designs include a Black-eyed Susan that is done in brass with a bronze stem; and a Sunflower with brass leaves and a bronze center and a Rose with a bronze stem and brass blossom.

• Oiled bronze door knockers are often more whimsical designs, such as a jumping frog or an old fashioned sun with points for rays and a smiling face.

• Just as nickel and chrome work well together, bronze and brass are used to offset each other and add dimension to the cast figures on the door knockers.
